Second Meadow Slough Creek

Image
My good friend Bruce and I hiked into the second meadow of Slough Creek yesterday. We had good early action on Caddis flies and Spruce Moths. Bruce caught his first Cutthroat Trout and missed a few other fish. I had a good day, picking up several big Cutthroats. I fished an old Orvis Graphite Spring Creek 9' 5wt. a favorite dry fly rod. Of course the scenery was fantastic and the company was great.

Ben Jewell's Slough Creek Spinner a step-by-step

Ben Jewell's - Slough Creek Spinner Fishing Yellowstone National Park's famous Slough Creek can be a real test of skill and fly fishing knowledge.  The Cutthroat trout are tough to catch and by mid-season have seen most every fly available.  Knowing a few key flies and how and when to fish them can make all the difference. There are a few flies I would not be without on Slough, this is one of them.  That's why my fellow guide Ben named it as such.  Anytime you see a fly with a creeks name, and you are going to fish that creek....... Yeah, you're going to want some of those. an average Slough Creek Cutt'y... I enjoy tying this fly even though it has more materials than I like and they can be troublesome to manage. Here you see wing bundles, each made up of white and dark gray Widow's Web and 2 strands of Krystal Flask.  Turkey rounds of Gray-olive biots are used to wrap the body and moose  body hair is spilt to form the tails. usi...

FAOL feature my Korn's CDC Spent-wing Caddis as the FOTW

Image
A short while ago I was encouraged by fellow FAOL forum members to submit a step-by-step of my Korn's CDC Spent-wing Caddis and the Parachute variation that I tie.  So I gathered up my meager photographic equipment and took some photo's of the tying process and sent it in.  Today they have posted it as the Fly Of The Week... see it here:  http://www.flyanglersonline.com/fotw/2012/fotw20120130.php

Slough Creek - Second Meadow Hike

Image
This is a picture that Doug took at Slough Creek in 2008.  I have had this on my computer screen at work for a long time.  We also had this picture put onto a canvas and hung it in our living room.  This place looked so picture perfect that I was always wishing that I could go to that spot someday.  It is an all day hike since it is 5 miles just to get to this spot.  Well, I finally made it! The location has changed a little bit but it is still a beautiful spot!  The Second Meadow at Slough Creek is a magnificent spot!  It is a long hike in - about 5 miles -  with much of it uphill.  We started the trek in at 6:30 am.  The moon followed us in for most of the morning. After reaching second meadow and the "picture spot", we rigged up and started to fish.  We worked our way around to this canyon that had many boulders.  Doug had me rock hopping to get to many small pools.  Yes, we worked our way right down th...
