I'm thinking turkey's and turkey tail nymphs. How about you?

Image
Hi folks - it's been a while since I last posted but it's good to be back at the lathe turning a call. I've been looking forward to hunting season and taking a bird to supply more tail-feathers for tying my turkey tail stone fly nymphs. These nymph's are very active in early spring and a sure bet in our local streams, the trout love them. Korn's Wire Head Turkey-tail Nymph I made this simple, clean lined osage call yesterday for a little lathe practice. The trumpet has a delrin mouth piece that I turned and is 8-1/4" overall. My thanks for giving it a look.

Korn’s Split-tail Salmon Fly (or Wrapped Body) Salmon Fly

Image
This is a variation of my Korn's Wrapped Foam Hopper that I tie for Parks Fly Shop.  It makes a super Salmon fly and you can use the same pattern for Golden Stone flies as well.  I just change the hook to a size 8-10 and the foam over body to a golden yellow.  Out West it's a killer fly when the Salmon flies are hatching and in the East for the small Spring Black Stone flies. I just change the color and downsize them to size 12... Materials: Hook: MFCo. 7026 4-6 Thread: black 6/0 Uni Legs: MFC med. black legs Underbody: orange craft foam wrapped Over body: black or dark brown craft foam, hook gap wide with split-tail Wing: deer tail hair Indicator: orange craft foam SBS tie in back legs split tie in underbody foam at eye extending out from hook superglue thread base, wrap orange foam back to tail-legs attach over body with 3 wraps at tail-legs, then loop thread over the top of the underbody to the eye (this way no wraps ...

Korn's Black and Tan APF Nymph

Image
A great "all purpose fly" and a good winter nymph.  Tied with a black phase gray squirrel tail, if you can get some.  If not use red fox squirrel instead using the darkest material on the tail.  My buddy Ben gave me a black squirrel tail from one he had shot and I tied up a bunch of these for him.  With or without a bead or wire head it's a great searching pattern on those dark and dreary winter days.  Fish it as a wet fly dead drifted and then swung downstream. Black and Tan APF (all purpose fly) Nymph tied and photographed by Doug Korn This fly is one of a series of variations of my Korn’s SCHWARPF fly.  (Swept Custom Hackle Winged All Revised Purpose Fly) materials list: Hook: vintage Mustad #16 wet Thread: Serafil tan 200/2 Wire Head and rib: gold 28 ga. craft wire 2 layers 4 and 3 turns Tail, Shellback and Wing: black squirrel tail tied in by the tips, divided 1/3 for tail, 2/3's for shellback and wing Bo...

More on Wire Heads...

Image
Here are a couple of photos of the Wire Heads using UV resin to coat the head after it has been formed by the wire.  This makes an extremely durable and shinny head. Here I 'm using a UV light for curing the resin on this Wire Head. Finished Wire Heads and a Korn's WH Stone Fly Nymph.

Catch of the day!

This guy took the Korn's Worm and I got several others on the Turkey Tail Black Stone. I even caught a few on top...  Cold out there today 40 degrees, but sunny... all-n-all a good day. my old Orvis scores again...

Cold Creek today...

My son Scott just got a brand new Orvis Clearwater 9' 5wt. 4pc. rod.... This rod has been totally redesigned with an all new profile and rod tapers taken from the Helios line --- a real beauty. That inspired me to fish my 1986 Orvis Graphite "Spring Creek" 9' 5wt. 4pc. rod today.  Sweet rod and we had some fun on the water.... nothing big but I caught fish on both the dry and the dropper all morning long.... Fly of the day: Neversink Black Orvis "Spring Creek" rod.

75 degrees today? In March? I gotta go fish'in!

B-day Fishing

Image
Today was a very nice fishing trip.  Our son Scott is here visiting us for his Birthday which happens to be today...  So with all the warmer weather we have been having this winter I encouraged him to bring his fishing gear with him.  This morning it was still 59 degrees out at 7 am. --- but the weather forecast was for some rain and dropping temps throughout the day so we decided to head out early rather than later.  It turned out to be a good move and I was quickly into a good fish right away.  Scott's a good fisherman and we managed to catch both some big and some small browns...  We caught some rain too but nothing that made us give-it-up...   I was the lucky guy today catching two nice brown trout, a 16 and a 17 incher, outstanding fish for this creek where 12 incher's are good fish... At noon we quit and headed for our local burger joint.  A wonderful day... Anytime spent with your son is great but none better than on s...

Rubber Legs Stonefly Nymph by John Scott

Image
My friend John Scott over on FAOL forum has a great Rubber Legs Stonefly Nymph* pattern that is a killer out west... I have great luck with it as does John...  I have scaled it down for here in NY to a size #14.  Just another stone to throw at them, simple to tie and different enough from what most folks are using around here. Hook: 1xl nymph #14  Thread: 6/0 Uni Black Weight: lead wrapped foil or black bead Tail & Legs: orange plastic fruit bag material or small rubber legs  Body: MFC Micro Lucent Chenille 035-black *see John's step-by-step here: RUBBER LEGS STONEFLY NYMPH by  John Scott, Lolo MT http://www.flyanglersonline.com/fotw...tw20100524.php

Little Stones

Image
Our son Scott and his fiancee Erin were visiting us this weekend.  He lives and fishes in and around the Endicott, NY area.  We were tying up some turkey tail nymphs for him to use because he's been seeing some small winter stones while fishing... The last time I was out fishing on 2/9/12, I saw a few of our small stone flies on the creek too.  It won't be long before they are out in earnest.  So, tie some up and be ready for them. Here are two nymphs that I like. Korn's Oatka Stone Nymph (soft-hackle) Hook: #14 - 1xl nymph Thread: 8/0 Uni Black Tail & Body: turkey tail Rib: small copper wire Thorax: black dubbing Soft-hackle: iridescent turkey neck feather Rene Harrop's Turkey Tail Nymph Hook: #14 - 1xl nymph Thread: 8/0 Uni Black Tail, Body, wingcase, thorax and legs: turkey tail Rib: small copper wire

Creek Report - April 29, 2010

Image
"On The Fly" - one of the many brown trout to come to hand this morning on the creek. The fish were taking green weenies early and then when the sun warmed things up the Korn's Oatka Stone was the hot fly. I was fishing a size 16 KOS without an over-wing in the film behind a BWO in 16 so I could use it as an indicator fly. I never took one fish on the BWO they all took the stone. A great morning of fishing was had. The Korn's Oatka Stone fly in action. I fished a Grey's Streamflex 8' 6" 4wt. rod fitted with a Hardy reel. Hope you can get out and catch some too!

Korn's Oatka Stone Fly

Image
Well folks, I fished again yesterday and took several nice brown trout on Oatka Creek which is about 45 minutes away from my home here in New York. We've been having a good little black stone fly hatch and this fly is just the ticket. I developed this fly to fish Oatka Creek in April and May when these little black stone flies hatch. The fly only has 2 or 3 materials depending on how you tie it. It’s a versatile fly that works best as a trailing fly and can be fished with (dry) or without (emerger) “Frog’s Fanny” floatant. Used as a lead dry fly it can be hard to see on the water. Variations include; cutting the CDC wing short for use as a nymph, adding a bead head, body and wing color, caddis variations minus the tail... with over-wing without over-wing bottom Hook: MFC #7000 dry fly std. #12-16 photo is 14 Thread: Uni 8/0 brown Tail & body: Turkey tail feather 8-10 vanes, tied in at bend to form short tails. Then wrapped forward over superglue to form body to one eye len...
