55 on the fly

Hi folks it's been a while since I last posted on the blog --- you know; Holidays, kids, grand-kids and tying flies..... In fact, I've been tying my little fingers off. Most recently, Spruce Moths, lots of them 40 dozen #14's for the shop. These flies are an absolute must have when fishing in Yellowstone Country. The spruce trees lining the rivers and creeks we fish are unfortunately infested with lots of Spruce Moths. If you've ever been out West you know that winds come up every afternoon and blow these moths into the creeks and the fish key on them. They just love-em like candy. In fact, when the fish are on them they won't take anything else. If you don't have some of these in your fly box and are going to be fishing out West this summer or early fall, you need to tie some up. Walter Wiese - head guide at Parks Fly Shop, introduces the new PFS web site he designed and built. I think he did a great job, go check it out! Walter on the Yellowstone River New website by Walter Wiese Parks' Fly Shop now has a brand-new and super-snazzy site! Still at www.parksflyshop.com, but all other addresses have changed. Much of the information is the same, but some new things have been added, hatch charts and other fishing information have been updated, and the names and descriptions of our new flies for 2011 have been posted (still waiting on pics). We're pushing private water trips much more for 2011, especially early and late in the year. The Paradise Valley spring creeks and private lakes in the area simply produce bigger fish and often more early in the season, and the lakes fish well all day in the fall, when the Yellowstone will only turn out an occasional pig in the AM but fishes well with dries in midafternoon at this time. What a day of turkey hunting we had Friday 10/29/10. Myself, Jim and Ben hunted in Cherry Creek, NY. We hunted two big fields where we knew the birds were feeding and traveling. I took a nice hen in the morning from my Double Bull blind as a flock of 30+ birds came to feed in the buckwheat. Ben got his hen in the afternoon, she was one of 27 birds feeding in the picked corn field he was watching. It was a cold rainy day but it sure paid off! I can tie all the turkey tail nymphs I want now... Jimmy and I with my bird. Ben with his hen, a 52 yard shot, yes that's reaching out there!
