My last post on Blogger

Image
Yep - this is my last post on blogger..... There's just not enough participation on my blog to keep it going. I post the same material on Facebook so you can follow me there if you like, that's where all my future posts will be. Just look up Doug Korn on Facebook. I will also be discontinuing my blog reader, as most of the folks I follow are on Facebook and I will read and respond there. I will leave my "On the Fly" blog up for now but I will not add any more content. My thanks for all of you that have followed my blog and commented. I will have many more projects and posts to come over on Facebook, see ya there.

Turkey-tail Soft Hackle Nymph (Stone Fly Nymph)

Image
Here's a great little variation of my Turkey-tail Nymph tied as a wet fly to imitate the stone flies that come off my home creek in early Spring... Dead drift it, then let it swing, then strip it in... Yeah it's a good one. Enjoy! Materials: Hook: #14-16 1xl nymph hook Thread: 8/0 Uni. Tail and body: Turkey-tail fibers Rib: Medium copper wire Thorax: black dubbing of choice Hackle: Turkey feather from the neck of the bird, 1-1/2 turns.

"Turkey on the Fly" - collecting fly tying materials...

Image
On opening day of the NY state fall turkey season I was fortunate to take this beautiful adult hen turkey in the pouring rain..... None of it will go to waste. All the meat will be eaten... in fact we already had Wild Turkey Chowder made with the legs from this bird.... Delicious! The feathers from the wings will be used on arrows; the body, neck and tail feathers will be used to create, nymphs, wet flies and streamers for fly fishing.....

Kingfisher - Ferrule Repair

Image
As some of you may remember I broke one of the tip sections of my recently rebuilt Kingfisher bamboo fly rod fishing out in Montana this summer... See the "Broken Hearted" post here: https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6587365398588568558#editor/target=post;postID=7645821091392945748;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=10;src=postname And if your interested in the total rebuild of this fly rod you can look back through the older posts and see those as well. Today, I worked on the repair of that broken tip section... the clean break right at the ferrule section... drilling out the old bamboo and pin removal... working on the bamboo fit and prep... the repaired and aligned ferrule with the pin installed... in the end I lost about 5/8" of the tip section... tools for wrapping the decretive black band... wrapped... first coat of spar varnish applied... just four more to go... and she will be good to fish....

Bubble Back Nymph...

Image
Here's an oldie of mine..... it works well in the early spring here in NY when the stone flies are coming off. I use this fly as a dropper about 14-16 inches back. The bubble gives it some action as it bobs and weaves in the current. Give it a go... Hook: Nymph 14-18 Thread: 8/0 Uni Tail: Krystal Flash Body: Pheasant tail Thorax: Hares ear and flash mixed dubbing Wing case: Bubble packing Bubble wrap material from computer components... completed Bubble Back Nymph...

Home waters here in Gardiner...

Image
On the Gardiner River with my buddy Ben a fellow guide from a few years ago... We got into some nice browns in deep holes.... Nymphing isn't my favorite way to fish but results do speak volumes... We caught 14 lost a few and only fished the morning, then we were off to the "Two Bit Saloon" for a breakfast burrito. It was a cold morning of fishing, fall is coming quickly.

A Butte.... of a day...

Image
It was a good day on Soda Butte Creek... Michelle and I got into them big time and had a ball... Here's a few of the Cutthroat trout we caught.

Photo Series

Image
Here's my wife Michelle standing in some very fast water, making a series of long casts to slack water near the rock face. She is casting over the fast water, then high sticking it and landing a fish. Yeah, she's good.

Second Meadow Slough Creek

Image
My good friend Bruce and I hiked into the second meadow of Slough Creek yesterday. We had good early action on Caddis flies and Spruce Moths. Bruce caught his first Cutthroat Trout and missed a few other fish. I had a good day, picking up several big Cutthroats. I fished an old Orvis Graphite Spring Creek 9' 5wt. a favorite dry fly rod. Of course the scenery was fantastic and the company was great.

Cast Aways

Friends, Bruce and Laurie  with Michelle and I in the high country...Just "casting the time away" having fun... catching a few. It was Laurie's first time fly fishing and she did great.

Montana Blue Line

Image
I found a little blue line of water at 7000' of elevation to play with here in Montana... What a great morning. I got out early trying to beat the predicted 98 degree heat. Lots of bugs, mostly caddis flies and spruce moths among the brush and spruce trees. I caught lots of fish. Cutthroats, Cutt-bows, Browns and some Rainbows... There were some big fish in this tight, boulder ridden little stream. I landed 3 fish over 12 inches and about 20 or so overall.... Fun stuff.
